Middleton Park
Middleton Park is situated not far from the City centre and is surrounded by the Middleton, Belle Isle and Beeston estates. It is 630 acres in size with nearly a third of that being ancient woodland. The woodland consists mainly of Oak which has been continually wooded since pre 1600.
The Park has a long and varied history and is well known for it's coal mining links with "Bell Pits" scarring the woodland indicating evidence of early coal mining from as far back as pre 1300.
On the outskirts of the Park you can find Middleton Railway, the worlds oldest railway that was first used to carry coal from the mines. Visit the Middleton Railway Page to find out more.
Today, the Park is a designated Nature Reserve and is the largest ancient woodland in Leeds. The Park is an abundant source of education for the local schools with it's walks, streams, ponds and array of wildlife, insects flowers and fungi. Some of the wild flowers include bluebells and yellow archangels.
The Park also offers recreational facilities such as tennis courts, bowling greens, grasslands and a top quality golf course.
