"I WAS THERE"

Season 2000-2001
Scott Dobie goes close
D3 * Carlisle United 1 - 2 Scunthorpe United * Saturday 28 October 2000

One point from the last eleven games is ample evidence that life is hard enough for the current Carlisle team, without match officials making things even harder.
A highly controversial penalty effectively sealed the Cumbrians fate midway through the first half leaving them chasing the visitors two goal lead.
The defeat leaves the Cumbrians realistically staring into the Conference abyss, with only a third of the season gone.
Manager Ian Atkins fury over the penalty and the performance of his team was evident. He said: "The first goal was down to us. Individuals don't see the importance of situations on the edge of the box. We go over it in training in picking up on those situations and we go out on the park and don't do it. You can't keep giving good starts to teams particularly when you're at the bottom like we are. The penalty then makes it 2-0 and makes life more difficult. I can't say too much or will get myself in trouble but I honestly don't see what officials see sometimes, but their decisions cost players, managers and coaches their jobs."
The Cumbrians again conceded an early goal on eleven minutes when Gareth Sheldon's long throw was flicked on by Steve Torpey for Bjarnolfur Larusson to volley passed home keeper Peter Keen.
The controversial penalty came with 22 minutes gone. Torpey hammered a shot straight at Stuart Whitehead, standing four yards away, and referee Mike Dean adjudged the Carlisle defender to have handled. The Iron's Lee Hodges stepped up to send Peter keen the wrong way.
The home side came back on 32 minutes with a Carl Heggs header going close from Whitehead's flick on from a Richard Prokas corner.
Four minutes later the visitors almost extended their lead when Lee Hodges cross shot skidded the wrong side of the post.
Just before half time Heggs and Steven Halliday both went close for the home side but the visitors deservedly led at the break.
Seven minutes into the second half Scunthorpe were unlucky not to get a third when Hodges' 25 yard free kick hit the bar.
As the Cumbrians got more into the game Mark Thurston headed wide David Lee's corner and Stephan Lemarchand volleyed over from Lee's cross.
Julian Darby's first goal for the club gave the home side a lifeline on 89 minutes, when he turned in Lee's free kick.
Well into injury time Lemarchand's fierce volley was well saved by Tom Evans but again it was too little too late for the sorry Cumbrians.
