Carlisle bowed out of the LDV Vans Trophy at the first hurdle after going down to holders Port Vale in an entertaining game.
Carlisle had the better of the first half but Vale upped the tempo in the second half to squeeze through.
Manager Roddy Collins was pleased with the performance and said after the game: "We created plenty of chances and dominated for long spells particularly in the first half. When we lost Steve Soley at half time it gave them the initiative in midfield . We needed to go to plan B but when you looked at the bench, the lack of strength in depth was evident. But we're playing well and giving good performances and just need a result. When we get everyone back from injury and suspension I will have a decent squad to choose from. Seeing Mick Galloway get on for the last five minutes was a bonus"
The first notable chance took 14 minutes to materialise when a Peter Murphy layoff put Steve Halliday in space, and with a little more composure he could have done better than shoot wide.
Vales attacking opportunities were limited but Stephen McPhee was unlucky to see his shot drift wide after leaving Winstanley in his wake.
The Cumbrians took a deserved lead on 19 minutes when Halliday found space on the left to get in a cross, with Richie Foran climbing above the Vale defence to glance his header home.
Carlisle again went close after Vale keeper Mark Goodlad saved at Foran's feet, for the ball to break to Murphy whose curled shot went narrowly over the bar.
As Carlisle continued to create the better chances Brendan McGill found space on the right, before forcing a good save out of Goodlad.
Vale increased their work rate in the second half and Stephen Brooker used his pace to good effect before shooting wide with Peter Keen beaten.
Carlisle then almost extended their lead on 50 minutes when a spectacular long range effort from substitute Steven Skinner thundered against the bar.
Vale's growing domination saw Brooker again break through forcing Keen into a full length save.
The inevitable equaliser came on 55 minutes with the aid of a little good fortune when Ian Armstrong's shot took a wicked deflection off Dave Rogers to send Keen the wrong way.
Six minutes later the Vale winner came courtesy of a quality finish from the impressive Brooker, after good work from McPhee.
Craig McAughtrie then headed wide for the Cumbrians as Vale continued to create more chances, Brooker again testing Keen with a first time shot from Armstrong's cross.
Foran and Jack had late chances for Carlisle but Vale managed to hang on to go into the next round and dream of another trip to Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
