Season 2001-2002
D3 * Hull City 0 - 1 Carlisle United * Tuesday 15 January 2002
Carlisle had the perfect reward following their 6-1 demolition of Leyton Orient on Saturday by recording their first away win of the season last night at promotion chasing Hull City, who found themselves losing for the first time at home for a year.

An early goal from Richie Foran and a solid second-half defensive performance was enough to earn the Cumbrians the points and leave manager Roddy Collins delighted after the game.

He said: "It was a good performance. We went straight at them from the off.

"We played some excellent football, our attacking play was good and our counter-attacking was fantastic. We got our just rewards.

"I don't like singling players out but Mark Winstanley was superb, showing his experience alongside the youth of Lee Andrews.

"They gave nothing away at the heart of the defence."

Carlisle began the game as they left off on Saturday with an Ian Stevens shot forcing Tigers’ keeper Paul Musslewhite into a good save with only three minutes gone.

Carlisle's clinical passing game put Hull on the back- foot and it was little surprise when they opened the scoring on nine minutes.

Stuart Green's low free- kick eluded a packed penalty area to find Richie Foran at the far post and he fired a first-time volley into the bottom corner.

Carlisle continued to dominate with a Green free-kick going narrowly wide and a Foran header scraping the bar.

On the half-hour, with Hull getting back into the game, Peter Keen saved well from Rob Matthews and Winstanley made a last-ditch tackle as David Beresford broke free.

Keen was now finding himself increasingly busy making full-length saves from Beresford and Justin Whittle.

Hull upped the tempo at the start of the second half with Alexander forcing Keen into a full-length save on 48 minutes.

The Cumbrians should have extended their lead with 55 minutes gone when Petty's sliced clearance put Stevens away, but Musselwhite came out to make a good one-on-one save.

Although Hull were having a lot of possession, they were finding if difficult to break through a solid Cumbrian rearguard. On 68 minutes, Beresford did find a way through but Keen was equal to his shot.

Hull were reduced to long-range efforts with Alexander, Johnsson and Matthews firing over.

But Carlisle were not to be denied and held on for a well-earned win.
