Season 2001-2002
D3 * Carlisle United 2 - 0 Torquay United * Tuesday 19 February 2002
With news that John Courtenay's takeover of the club has been finalised and a Press conference called for Monday of next week, Roddy Collins' players made the day complete with three more points to edge them further away from the Third Division basement.

Carlisle are now 12 points clear of bottom club Halifax with a game in hand, but Roddy Collins will still not rest.

He said: "This game was a six-pointer, but we didn't have the same pressure on us as Torquay did. We will not relax until we are mathematically safe. Any team can go on a good run and climb to safety.

"The good news of the takeover completion means a new beginning for the club, players and supporters. There will be a happy atmosphere around the club."

With a gale-force wind at their backs, Torquay forced three corners in the first two minutes and continued to peg Carlisle back as the Cumbrians struggled to get out of their own half.

With 23 minutes gone Richard Logan should have scored for the Gulls, but put his free header over the bar from Steve Tully's right wing cross.

Carlisle had a half-chance on 33 minutes with a rare foray into Torquay's half.

But Steve Halliday's cross was just too long for Richie Foran who was free at the far post.

Three minutes later, Jason Fowler rattled a left foot shot past Peter Keen's right-hand post. On the stroke of half-time Carlisle had their first attempt on goal when Stuart Green's free-kick was headed over by Foran.

With the wind at their backs, Halliday should have done better than curl a right foot shot over the bar for the Cumbrians, when a Foran miskick put him clear.

Peter Murphy then had an inswinging corner well save d by Kevin Dearden and the Gull's keeper again saved well from a Foran header

As Carlisle dominated Dearden was kept busy turning Green's free kick round the post but Hill went close for Torquay heading wide from a Tully free kick.

As time appeared to be running out Carlisle's first goal came with seven minutes remaining. Green's free- kick from the right found Mark Winstanley unmarked and the central defender headed home his first goal for the club.

Keen then pushed a stunning Fowler shot round the post before Carlisle wrapped up the points with two minutes remaining.

A Murphy through ball put Green clear and after beating two defenders he calmly rounded Dearden before shooting home to cap off a great day for the Cumbrians.
