The Carlisle players managed to put the off-field activities to the back of their minds to gain a point at Bootham Crescent, which in the end could have been all three.
After enduring early York pressure, in which Peter Keen was again outstanding saving a first minute penalty, the Cumbrians did enough in the second half to have won the game.
For acting manager Billy Barr it was a good first day at the office and he said after the game: "We were overrun too often in the first half hour, but we put that right at half time and the pleasing thing was the players went out and did exactly as I asked.
"I thought we did enough in the second half to have just nicked it.
"When they got the first minute penalty I thought `what a start, here we go' but Peter Keen did what he's done all season and made a great save.
"With the difficulties of the last few days I told the players to go out and play for themselves and if they did , the team would perform and hopefully come away with a result."
Keen was soon to stake a claim for his man of the match performance saving a penalty from Michael Proctor in the first minute after had had tripped the same player. Keen then again found himself under pressure saving again from Proctor and then tipping a John Parkin effort round the post for a corner.
Carlisle's first effort came with 28 minutes gone with an Ian Steven's turn and shot over the bar with York then going close when Nogan hit the post a minute later.
Steve Halliday then played in Stevens only for him to pull his right-foot shot wide.
Parkin should then have put City in front but blazed over the bark after good work from Nogan. A minute before the break Halliday went close for the Cumbrians after picking up a loose ball 25 yards out before shooting narrowly wide of the upright.
Little had been seen of Carlisle as an attacking force in the first half but they started brightly after the break.
A sweeping crossfield ball from Dave Rogers found Brendan McGill down the right and when his cross was only partially cleared Tony Hopper shot over from the edge of the box.
Halliday then latched on to a ball over the top from Rogers and his lay-off found Stevens whose shot was pushed away by Alan Fettis in the York goal.
With 77 minutes gone the Cumbrians were unlucky not to take the lead when Halliday's shot from the edge of the box came back off the upright.
York's best chance fell to Nogan but Keen spectacularly turned his header away.
With four minutes remaining the Cumbrians almost snatched all three points when substitute Jonny Allan picked up a loose ball 30 yards out to crack a shot against the bar.
