Carlisle gave themselves a timely confidence boost ahead of their bottom of the table clash with Swansea on Saturday, with a Golden Goal winner in a seven goal thriller at Boundary Park.
The Cumbrians had squandered a 3-1 lead to be level after ninety minutes, but substitute Craig Farrell popped up with a 97th minute winner to send them through to the second round.
It was little more than they deserved as they dominated their high flying Second Division opponents with some scintillating, attacking football.
"We played some great football," said manager Roddy Collins. "We deserved the four goals we scored but the performance was what mattered for me.
"We wanted to build on our performance on Saturday (at Macclesfield) for the morale of the team, so tonight's performance was more important than the result.
"We are starting to gel the team together. Tonight you could see there was great passing and movement and it was a great performance to build on for Swansea on Saturday."
Carlisle almost took the lead after four minutes when John Sutton blocked a David Miskelly clearance only for the ball to bounce agonisingly wide of the post.
Chris Killen then volleyed over for the Latics before a rasping 25 yard free kick from Peter Murphy scraped the Oldham bar.
On 10 minutes Leon Osman combined well with Mark Magennis before firing narrowly wide.
Oldham took the lead on 19 minutes when Darren Sheridan found Wayne Andrews in acres of space and the front man gave Glennon no chance with a shot into the bottom corner.
The lead was short lived as the Cumbrians drew level six minutes later. Magennis again combined well with Osman to send the Everton loan player clear, drawing Miskelly before slotting home.
Glennon had to save well from Vernon and Killen with a thundering 35 yard free kick from Lourenco shaving a post in between.
Carlisle took the lead on 58 minutes when Sutton got to the by-line to pull the ball back for Osman to squeeze home his second of the night.
Five minutes later the lead was extended. Miskelly failed to collect Armstrong's attempted headed back pass and Farrell nipped in to tuck the loose ball away from a tight angle.
The Cumbrians should now have been coasting but two goals in a minute threw the tie back into the melting pot.
Scott Vernon picked up the ball on the edge of the box to fire a left foot shot past a bemused Glennon who appeared to think the ball was going wide.
The seventeen year old then grabbed his second less than a minute later heading home a Michael Clegg cross.
Carlisle then survived a blatant Murphy handball in the box before the tie slipped into Golden Goal extra time.
Two minutes after the restart Farrell missed a great one on one chance to seal the tie but made no mistake five minutes later, latching onto a Brian Wake through ball before shooting past the advancing Miskelly.
