Season 2002-2003
LDV2 * Carlisle United 1 - 0 Stockport County * Tuesday 12 November 2002
Carlisle gained another Second Division scalp in Stockport County with a Will McDonagh Golden Goal winner in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Carlisle had plenty of chances to wrap things up long before extra time but had to wait until the 109th minute to finally kill the game.

The win keeps the Cumbrians' momentum going, having lost only one of their last seven games.

Roddy Collins was pleased with the performance and said after the game: "I felt in the first half we were a little bit tentative and I didn't thing we coped particularly well with the extra time Stockport allowed us on the ball.

"In the second half we settled down and played some excellent football. We didn't give the ball away as much as we did in the first half and started to create chances.

"When it came to extra time, it's anyone's game but the way we were playing, the lads were always going to win it."

Stockport almost took the lead on five minutes when Luke Beckett broke clear on the edge of the box but was unfortunate to see to see his delicate lob bounce on the top of the bar to safety.

The visitors had a lucky escape with 14 minutes gone when Robert Clare's clearance ricocheted off fellow defender Dave Challinor only to scrape the wrong side of the post.

A disappointing opening to the game was producing few chances but Brendan McGill was presented with a great opening on 26 minutes, but when Alan Blayney's clearance went straight to him he hit a weak shot straight back to the keeper.

As the tempo of the game picked up a little extra pace Beckett latched onto a John Hardiker cross but shot straight at Glennon and Ben Burgess headed over an Ali Gibb cross.

On the stroke of half time, Des Burn went close twice for the Cumbrians, firing a 25-yard free kick narrowly over and scraping the top of the bar with a shot from 30 yards.

Beckett had a great chance for Stockport immediately after the break, running clear of the Carlisle defence only to roll the ball past the advancing Glennon and the far post.

Carlisle came closest to a goal eight minutes into the second half when Craig Farrell ran onto Ryan Baldacchino's through ball only for Hardiker to clear his shot off the line.

Richie Foran did have the ball in the net on 72 minutes after picking up a Peter Murphy through ball, but a poor decision ruled him narrowly offside. Brendan McGill then ran onto a Leon Osman through ball only to be thwarted by a saving tackle from Briggs.

As Carlisle poured forward in search of a winner McGill's shot was blocked by Challinor and Richie Foran brought the best out of Blayney

Into Golden Goal extra time, Farrell broke through twice only to fire straight at Blayney before Carlisle's golden touch struck again.

McDonagh picked up a loose ball 25 yards out to fire a shot into the bottom corner aided by a deflection off Goodwin which sent Blayney the wrong way.
