For those that condemned Carlisle as a team incapable of defending, this was the game where the Cumbrians responded to silence their detractors. Their swashbuckling style was abandoned in favour of a meticulously planned defensive performance that belied the fact that this was only the third clean sheet achieved in twenty-one games.
The central defensive partnership of Peter Murphy and Michael Taylor were outstanding in containing Scunthorpe’s formidable strike partnership of Steve Torpey and Martin Carruthers and when they were breached keeper Matty Glennon was at his impeccable best.
Manager Roddy Collins had slated his players following their defeat at York last week but was full of praise following this fully committed response. He said after the game: “We came not to concede and getting into the Third Round is a bonus. We didn’t play to open the game up. We kept their full backs at home and kept the midfield nice and tight. The most important thing was that we didn’t concede a goal and we achieved that objective and I was delighted with the way we defended.
“I was pleased with concentration and also with the bravery of the players under pressure. They never lost their cool. The players are growing every time they play and it adds to the building of the team.”
Richie Foran had a great chance to open the scoring after three minutes, but his diving header went wide from Peter Murphy’s free kick.
Matty Glennon had an immaculate afternoon, his first save coming on six minutes from a Matthew Sparrow shot. The keeper then saved from an Andrew Dawson free kick but could only watch as Torpey broke through, only to roll his shot the wrong side of the post.
The hard working Paul Robinson finally found some space to turn and fire in a shot which had Evans scrambling to cover and Foran then tested the home keeper from 25 yards.
The best opening of the half fell to Scunthorpe when Torpey’s shot was blocked and Kilford picked up the loose ball but with plenty of time managed to screw his shot over the bar.
The Scunthorpe goal had a lucky escape immediately after the break when Brenadan McGill’s on target strike ricocheted off Jamie McCombe, but agonisingly flashed the wrong side of the post.
McGill again went close when Robinson played him into space, only to volley over but Carruthers issued a warning at the other end, his header forcing Glennon full length.
Scunthorpe continued with a good spell of pressure, McCombe heading over a Kilford corner and Graves shooting wide from a Torpey layoff but the Cumbrians were unlucky not to break the deadlock with an hour gone. A Scunthorpe clearance was headed back into the box by Summerbell. Foran reacted quickly but McCombe charged down his shot and the ball broke to McGill whose shot was blocked by a last ditch Byrne tackle.
Glennon then brought off the save of the game, flinging himself to his left to turn a Scott Brough piledriver over the bar.
As time ran out Scunthorpe threw everyone forward, Glennon saving twice from Torpey but Sparrow came very close, hitting the outside of the post.
The last chance fell to Brough, deep into injury time, but his hurried shot in a goalmouth scramble screwed over the bar.
