Carlisle missed out on a lucrative home FA Cup tie against Leeds after falling to a single-goal defeat in last night's second-round replay. Scunthorpe now go on to host the Premiership side in the third round, leaving the Cumbrians to rue what might have been.
For all their effort over the 90 minutes, Carlisle lacked the creativity in midfield to stamp their authority on the game.
Influential midfielder Leon Osman was not given permission to play by his club Everton and the Cumbrians had further bad news after being told Osman's loan spell will not be extended. He will now play his final Carlisle game at home to Darlington on Boxing Day.
Manager Roddy Collins was philosophical in defeat. "In the first half we didn't play particularly well and then got nicked by a set-piece. Up to that point they hadn't looked like scoring," he said.
"We had a lot of pressure in the second half and could have scored one at least, but that final touch in the box deserted us on the night."
Darren Kelly was unlucky not to open the scoring for Carlisle on 12 minutes with a blistering 30-yard free-kick, tipped over the bar by Tom Evans.
But with 25 minutes gone, Scunthorpe took the lead. A quick free-kick by Ian Kilford put Martin Carruthers clear and the former Darlington forward coolly slotted across the advancing Matty Glennon. Two minutes later, Peter Murphy crashed a 35-yard free kick against the Scunthorpe bar and then played a neat one-two with Richie Foran to put himself clear, only to drag his shot wide.
With the Iron content to sit back on their lead, Carlisle were finding difficulty in penetrating their well-organised defence but Paul Robinson went close on 37 minutes, shooting narrowly wide from Murphy's through-ball.
Evans came to Scunthorpe's rescue again early in the second half, acrobatically tipping over a Brian Wake header from Kelly's right-wing cross.
Murphy then saw a left-foot volley creep agonisingly wide of the post and Foran's volley from a Byrne free-kick was again saved point blank by the busy Evans.
Continuous Cumbrian pressure saw a Wake shot kept out by Evans after a Foran flick played him in.
Mark Summerbell was shown a red card with 71 minutes gone after a crude challenge on Wayne Graves which saw the Scunthorpe midfielder carried off.
And Calvo Garcia should have wrapped things up in injury time for Scunthorpe but stroked his shot wide after being put clean through by Parton.
The league will now become top priority for Collins and his players as they try to pull away from the Division Three basement.
