I recorded a log of much of the journey behind MN 35005 "Canadian Pacific" using a hand held GPS device. The log is available to download as an Excel file (in self extracting zip file format for PC users only) here: CanPac_20010816.exe. Alternatively click here to display directly in your web browser (may require a recent version of Internet Explorer or Netscape to work correctly). If you choose to download, after downloading to a location of your choice execute the file which will expand into an Excel spreadsheet (.xls file). This contains data taken directly from the GPS. Times are Greenwich Mean, not British Summer. Some portions of the log are interrupted by tunnels which cutoff reception of the satellite radio signals. I have annotated certain points with the names of stations. The names have been applied to the nearest observation which may be 1/4 mile or so adrift. Distances in the log are computed by the GPS - not yet aligned these with the mileposts. The log from Salisbury to Romsey is not complete. The first column gives the Ordnance Survey Grid Reference of position. Included is a speed (mph) / distance (miles) graph of the final lap into Waterloo - the most impressive running of the day. Mileage is as computed by the GPS expressed as miles from Waterloo. A brief conversation with the fireman at Waterloo revealed steam production was restored to health by Basingstoke and a fine run to Surbiton was recorded with some spectacular accelerations, albeit with a 9 coach train. Congratulations to all concerned. Mike Nichols |
