  Letters in Christies sale

Christies, London recently had two lots of Keith Murray in their february sale. The first being a lovely matt green ridge vase, the second, whilst not looking quite so wonderful on our side boards or in our china cabinets, was a selection of letters exchanged between Mr Gower (please see 'articles' page) and Keith Murray in the 1970's. They are with reference to Mr Gowers article which he wrote for Art & Antiques in 1976

The lot consists of five letter, two of which are two pages long. The letters are all hand written on headed paper and signed by Keith Murray.

We have selected one of the five letters, here, which we found to be amusing. It reads :-

Dear Mr Gower,                                     I'll be glad to answer your questions, provided they are easy! The trouble is that I'm only half-educated and illiterate, but also inarticulate - to say little of being well into my 80's and disinclined for and dissaproving of much effort. In plain English, I am at that stage of my life, Lazy! Yours Sincerely ,                      Keith Murray

Many thanks to Graham for allowing us to publish these items.

Faking it Big Time We have noticed a number of items appearing on eBay, recently, which are illegally being sold as items designed by Keith Murray. The first three items to be listed by the seller, were a glass bowl, a shallow pressed glass dish with shell border and a pair of pressed glass candle holders with shell border. All items are claimed to be signed, although none of the photographs show any marks whatsoever. There are currently four more items being sold (see photos). These are a grey ceramic bulbous vase, a powder blue ceramic vase, two globular two-colour metal vases and a silver coloured metal coffee set. None of the items are marked with Keith Murray's signature or monogramme. Complaints have been lodged with ebay and the authorities about the items but we would urge any unsuspecting collectors not to bid. If you do inadvertantly bid there is a simple procedure for retracting your bid. Please see details at ebay.
