Bruach na Frithe

Best Map: Harveys Superwalker Skye The Cuillin

Best Guide: Scrambles from Glen Brittle, Charles Rhodes

Time: 5 Hours

Start: Carpark at grid 422258 Not shown on map but it is there opposite the path.

Notes: These are serious hills and proper equipment and preparation is essential. The weather can change within the hour. If in doubt turn back and leave it for another day.
Easy walk-in following clear path to reach very small lochan. We found going just past this point to approx. grid 450270 then ascending south eastward to attain the ridge worked best. The terrain lower down is confused but keep heading upward and the ridge becomes clearer. Compass is unreliable in this range of hills due to the gabbro. Most books mention a clear path to the west of the ridge itself. Don’t believe it. There is a path but it becomes very indistinct in places from grid 455258 onward. The ridge scramble is exposed but not too hard. And at least you don’t have to keep looking for the path. Summit views are brilliant if it’s a clear day! Easy decent via Fionn Choire. The starting point for the decent is around grid 464252 between Basteir Tooth and Am Basteir. Worth a small detour but take care as there is a lot of exposure. We kept to the left hand side (streams on the right) and climbed slightly over the hanging choire from where you can see the lochan at the top of the bealach where the climb proper started. Oh yes – don’t forget the chocolate.
