GINGER IN THE YELLOW DRESS
By
Anne Brett

I sat at my table wondering why I'd come....
Oh well, what the Hell,
I could sit here and hum.
And smile and nod and tap out the beat....
That I knew would never reach my feet!
And then I saw him, making his way,
slowly but surely across that crowded floor
In a total panic I thought.... Oh God! Where's the door!
Baseball cap on his head! On his feet, house-shoes!
And from his expression, he was in a good mood!

Right toward ME! What would I say?
Was he? YES! He was heading my way!
Hi, he said softly, I'm Fred and your Ginger....
We're gonna dance, so come on girl, don't linger!
Then he tipped his cap and said with a smile....
Come on now! Let's dance for awhile!
I'm in a tux! And you; well let's see....
A yellow dress I think. That pleases me!
All ruffles and frills, long and flowing....
Come on now; let's get going!

So onto the dance floor we went slowly....
Fred's mood sublime and mine quite lowly!
I on my walker and Fred in his chair....
What a sight this was! You should have been there!
Oh God! Fred they're staring, I said with despair....
Who gives a damn Ginger, and he turned with flair...
They ain't got a clue 'bout what we're gonna do....
Come on now, get the beat! One, two....
Let 'em watch, let 'em laugh, let 'em giggle....
You and me Ginger, we're gonna DANCE AND WIGGLE!

We were lost in a world of moving lights and sounds.
Stopping only for the music, anticipating the next round.
The waltz, the rumba, the tango no less,
We bopped and twisted right along with the best!
We swayed and dipped, never missing a beat....
Taking time out for water or soda - that was our treat.
We carved out our own little niche on that floor....
And as each song ended, Fred clapped and yelled MORE! MORE!

Seize the moment with gusto! Fred said with glee....
You are YOU Ginger; and me, I'm ME....
Your beautiful in that long yellow dress....
Knew you would be though. Good guess!
And so I twirled, so light on my feet....
Following Fred's lead, right on the beat!
And as we danced, in perfect step with each other,
I knew right then, if one had one's druthers....
That this night of nights would never end!

All my fears of "I Can't", gone with the wind!
What a gift from Fred I'd been given!
To accept myself! Who I was! To start living!v Now is now and then is then....
This moment.... Well, it won't be again!
Life is a treasure - life is a song....
And all to soon life's over - It's gone. GONE!
The lyrics are different with each day
Some glad, some sad - but what the HEY?
Let your spirit glow from within....
THAT'S CONTAGEOUS! Fred said with a grin.
Spread it around, don't hog it, nor hoard it....
And then he gave the "High 5" bit!

I gotta go Fred said with a frown....
My bus is on time, but I'll be around.
See ya next time Ginger, we'll dance again!
And with that, he gave me that "High 5" and a big grin....
Slowly but surely we made our way off the floor....
Me to my table, Fred to the door.
Couples started cheering, the applause a loud roar!
Some were even shouting - MORE! MORE!
Fred just smiled and did "High 5's" around....
Our acceptance was given by that deafening sound!

I never danced with my Fred again.
But often I think of his "High 5" and that grin...
The MS won, he's no longer around....
And I know he's not wheelchair bound.
I see him wearing a tux and wings....
Dancing with angels; doing other fun things.
But the magic of life's song that he gave me....
To soak it up, don't waste it! Absorb it and BE!
WOW and Thanks Fred, and YES! I'll always remember...
That wonderful magical night, that I became Ginger!
