Poet's Corner

Brittany West

2000

When I am an old, old woman, when my hands are cracked and withered, when my face is lined with sorrow, I shall rejoice. When time has slipped in and stolen me away, and my eyes brim with despair, in all my sadness I shall rejoice. When I am so very old and my memory can hold no more and my smile has faded away, yes, I shall rejoice. I shall remember days gone by and how it felt to live. I shall ponder my existence and prepare to ask my Lord: WHY? When I am ragged and broken by many years of pain and I sit with the sun on my weak and bony shoulders, I shall rejoice. One day, when I am an old, old woman and my children and their children visit with caution and I'm merely a habit to see, when I am a burden unto this world and my babies want to forget me, I shall rejoice. I shall think of my father's ability to tell stories on snowy nights, my mother's way of making the most exquisite snacks on Sunday afternoons. I shall remember sleeping late and walking in a purple twilight. I shall remember. When I have these things no more and I grieve for them, I shall rejoice. When tears slip into the rivets of my tired skin and my hands tremble and my body lets go, indeed I shall rejoice. When tubes and needles and machines pump my heart and force air into my lungs and my life is a spider's web of plastic lines, I shall rejoice. When death comes to whisk me away, I will abandon all fear and smile upon the world as I had never before. When I am a very sad, old woman, I in all my lovely glory, I in my peace and serenity, shall rejoice.
