In Memory of Dad

Dad

You brought us up the best you could
Until responsibility given to others
Gave you the freedom to come and go.
Money you paid for food and for clothes
Love is free but was not there
Not even a hug to show that you cared

Trips you took us on to relatives up north
No seaside, no sand, no stick of rock
Advice is free, and plenty you gave
No help with homework
Not even a hug to show that you cared

Feeling neglected and unwanted, I ran away
Watched you searching from door to door
Saw you with your head in your hands
Decided to give you one more chance
Returned with my arms open wide
'Thank goodness for that, I'm late for the pub'
Not even a hug to show that you cared

I returned home from school, my clothes at the back door
'You're on your own now,' you told me that day
Four pounds you gave me to start off in life
I pleaded and begged asking to stay
A shake of your head, not a tear in sight
Not even a hug to show that you cared

Years later our paths crossed again
Not a word as to how I had been
I tried my best to make matters right
You brushed me aside at a stroke
'Sorry son, I'm late for the dance.'
Not even a hug to show that you cared

Visited you in hospital
I could see that you were ill
An old man pale and weak
Still you would not shake my hand
In your coffin inexpensive and bare
I placed my arm around you
Gave you a hug to show that I cared

Aunt Chrissie, Jean and Alan
Altogether you are now
Don't do as you did in life
Give them a hug to show that you care
Save a place for me
