My trip to Filey (East Yorkshire)
By
Mike Coatesworth

This is the start of my tour of visiting different holiday camps in the UK to see how wheelchair friendly they are and whether the camps live up to their reputation when they advertise campsites as “wheelchair Friendly.”

My first site was the “Blue Dolphin” campsite on the East coast of Yorkshire, approximately two miles from Filey.

When I visited the "Blue Dolphin" caravan holiday camp, owned by "British Holidays," I found it a great place for rest and relaxation.

I had hired a specially adapted caravan for wheelchair users, and although it was nothing luxurious, I found it to be comfortable. There was a ramp to the double doors, and inside there were sliding doors to the bedroom and bathroom. The double bedroom was quite sufficient to get a wheelchair in, but the bathroom although a wheelchair could easily fit in the room; I found it a little cramped, and the shower was not wheel-in, so assistance was required in that department.

The hallway in the caravan was wide enough for a wheelchair, and the living room / Dining room combined, again, although wide enough for a wheelchair, once in the room, other members of the party had to either walk around the chair carefully or climb over it.

Assistance would be required if the wheelchair user is attempting to make a meal, as the cooker and work tops are high, and the cupboards fairly high above this.

The main camp itself is wheelchair friendly, although there are a lot of speed bumps. (They are for the safety of the pedestrians, and therefore necessary.)

The main building of the complex has two wheelchair friendly toilets, and ramps to the main family show room, where some great entertainment is laid on. The large fast food restaurant is no problem at all, as there is plenty of room to manoeuvre

There are three shops, one of which is a supermarket that is completely wheelchair friendly, and the assistants are not only pleasant, but also go out of their way to help in any way they can.

Next door is the gift shop and although this is wheelchair friendly, there are obstacles (racks with postcards etc) that have to be moved aside to allow a good look around the shop.

Around the corner is the photography shop, and this has a large step, and there isn't much room inside, so all purchasing has to be done from the doorway.

Other facilities on site, but mainly for children are also wheelchair friendly.

Overall I would definitely recommend the "Blue Dolphin" for a wheelchair friendly relaxing holiday, where all the staff are more than willing to assist wherever necessary.
