Rail Travel from Calella to Barcelona

January 2005

After looking around Calella in Costa Brava, we decided to visit Barcelona, and what better way to travel than by using the local transport. So we headed for the railway station and I was impressed with the wide aisles and ramps for wheelchair users into the station and into the cafeteria. Then the train arrived and I was truly disappointed. I asked the station master how I was to get up the two steps of the train, and he just shrugged his shoulders. There was no way at all that I could board the train on my own, and the train only stops for a couple of minutes so I had to be quick. So with the assistance of my carer and a few kindly passengers I managed to get on board, and I was again truly impressed at how spacious it was.

Arriving at Barcelona, I had to go through the process of being helped off the train by my carer and kindly passengers while the stationmaster looked on. But once in Barcelona station, everything was again wheelchair friendly, and lifts were placed to get wheelchair users up to ground level.

So excuse me for not understanding why the stations are wheelchair friendly, but getting on the trains are definitely not.
