Who is on the committee? Committee members
and officers are elected each
year at the Annual General Meeting and further members can be co-opted
throughout the year. The present committee is a mixture of experienced
supporters and new faces. It meets five or six times a year at the library,
(during the lunch hour on a Saturday) to discuss current business.
Susan has lived in Highgate for 30 years and, with her family, has used the library for the
whole of that time. She became more closely involved about four years ago. She is an avid reader
and a voluntary community activist, and says that being so active in library affairs has brought
a whole new meaning to the spare time she thought she might have when cutting back on her
part-time job as market research interviewer.
Sarah is a founder member of HLAG and has acted as Secretary for the whole of its eleven
year life. A Londoner, she has lived in Highgate since 1970.
Margaret is a relative newcome to the committee, but only because she has only lived in Highgate
for two years.
Helen is a founder member of HLAG and was a past Chairman and Treasurer. She has led a
much-traveled life and settled in Highgate in 1964. She is Secretary of the Shepherds
Hill Association, which she represents on the Highgate Conservation Area Advisory Committee.
Peter, another founder member, is a keen supporter of Jackson's Lane Community Centre as well
as the Library. He is an accomplished pianist.
Long-time members of the Highgate community, they have taken on the serious jobs of
Membership Secretary (Ian) and Distribution Secretary (Kirsten) for many years.
Ian not only keeps the records, but can be seen at the libary many Saturdays persuading
readers to join and/or pay their subs. Kirsten makes cakes and hats for raffles and charms
others into delivering newsletters and posters at regular intervals.
Peter has returned to the committee after working abroad (he was also a founder member). He
has lived in Highgate and used the library for many years.
Tim came to the last AGM and found himself on the committee before the dust of his move has
settled. A lifelong supporter of libraries, he has been active on many fronts - posting
posters and analyzing the survey forms has kept him in the thick of events.
Cyril joined the committee this year and has lived on Shepherds Hill for 27 years. He is on
the SHA Committe and the Highgate Conservative Advisory Committee. He was active on the
campaign to stop the widening of the Archway Road in the 1970s and '80s.
Marion, whose three young sons use the library regularly, is the committee's newest member. She
found her current job through a notice in the library, and is a keen supporter.
