the Ridgeway Bus

In previous years a special bus service catering for visitors and walkers has operated along a route close to the Ridgeway path. Sadly this service has now been withdrawn. However, with careful planning, it is still possible to reach the Ridgeway by bus.

Ridgeway Bus Routes

All of the bus routes listed below call at Ashbury Rose & Crown which is situated half a mile north of the Ridgeway path. Wayland's Smithy is 1 mile east along the path from Ashbury; White Horse Hill is 2 miles east along the path. The Rose & Crown serves food but is closed between 15:00 & 18:00.

service 47 Swindon to Lambourn

Mondays to Saturdays 

Crosses the Ridgeway path just south of Ashbury; approximately one mile from Wayland's Smithy and two miles from White Horse Hill.

service X47 Swindon to Wantage

Saturdays only 

Calls at Fox Hill adjacent to the Ridgeway path.  Also calls at Woolstone at the foot of White Horse Hill. The Shepherd's Rest at Fox Hill serves food.

Travelling from Milton Keynes

To join the Ridgeway bus routes, take the X5 from Milton Keynes to Oxford and either the Oxford to Wantage bus (route X30) or the Oxford to Swindon bus (route 66). Note that bus connections are not guaranteed.

A Stagecoach Explorer ticket will cover the Stagecoach buses from Milton Keynes to Swindon or Wantage. It will be necessary to pay separate fares on the Ridgeway routes.
