Solent
Branch
Let Go Forward / Let Go Aft Our branch came into existence following local advertising by the National Committee of the MNA. After some initial meetings, the Solent branch was inaugurated in November 1995. Throughout the existence of the branch, 'The Flying Angel Club' (Mission To Seafarers) in Queens Terrace, Southampton, has been our HQ, and in the congenial surroundings (with bar!) we unite in the evening of the last Thursday of each month at 19.45.hrs. The aim of the association is to bring together merchant seamen, regardless of rank; in a social atmosphere and to provide for their welfare. We also remember those seamen who died during the wars. Our organisation is non political and self supporting. Associate membership is available for wives and partners of seafarers, and anyone interested in our association. We have close contact with other organisations, i.e.. Royal British Legion, and Royal Naval Association. For further information please e-mail, telephone or just turn up at one of our branch meetings, you will be most welcome.

First Official M.N.Day After a long campaign by the M.N.A. and Solent Branch in particular for an official Merchant Navy Day. See copy of letter received by Solent Branch from their Patron Rt. Hon. John Prescott, Deputy Leader, addressed to Solent Branch Secretary. 15th December 1999. Thank you for your letters of 22nd October and 28th November 1999. I apologise for the delay in replying. It is true the Government had decided an Annual Merchant Navy day, from next year on the 30th September to link with the International Maritime day. However, as you know the Merchant Navy Association has expressed concerns that there was a potential for a clash, given that their own Merchant Navy day would be held on 3rd September in recognition of the loss of the first merchant vessel to be sunk in the second World War. The Government is keen that the Merchant Navy Day should be a day on which all parties can work together in order to recognise the Merchant Navy in the life of the nation, both in terms of its past and in its future. As we wish to avoid any potential for a clash should there be two Merchant Navy days, the Government has decided that the national Merchant Navy day should be held on the 3rd September each year. Signed / John Prescott. |
