Life History

Alfred Thomas Stimpson was born on 13-Oct-1890 at Culham Berks. He was the second son of Thomas Stimpson and Annie nee King.  After about 4 years of living at Culham, Alfred moved with his parents to Ock Street Abingdon c.1894. His Grandfather Thomas King had recently died and it seems likely this death prompted the move to Ock Street. Alfred was probably educated at Abingdon School then maybe later Draycott (Southmoor) then Standlake. By the time of the 1911 census Alfred was living at Appleford with his parents. Alfred left school at the age of 13 and started work helping his father on a farm for Half-a-Crown a week. He later became a brick layer by trade and spent most of his working life following this profession. He was known to have helped re-build the New Theatre in George Street Oxford in 1933/4. He worked for Collett and Rodgers builders. (and possibly Kingerlees builders).

On 3-Apr-1915 Alfred married Edna Mary Stimpson at Appleton Church Berks. Alfred was known to be living in Eaton at the time of the marriage. Soon after the marriage they set up home at Park Lane Appleton, probably in (or close to) the house already occupied by Edna's mother. They went on to have 7 children. In September 1939 Alfred and his family moved from Park lane to 83 Eaton Road Appleton where they lived for a while. He then built his own house at 108 Eaton Rd on the land he had purchased for £50 from Mr C Gore (Appleton House). He borrowed £20 from daughter Mary for this purchase. The land was formerly part of Deans Farm.

After retirement from the building trade Alfred worked part-time as a Gardener / Handyman at several private houses in the Tubney area.

Hobbies / Pastimes / Other info.

Alfred enjoyed Rabbit Shooting. He often rode a Bicycle for transport and he kept Corgi dogs in his later years. He enjoyed Amateur Mechanical engineering and often constructed devices from his own imagination. These included various carts made from pram wheels to attach to the back of his bicycle, and a device to help plant seed potatoes without the need to bend over. For a time he owned a Jowett motor car. He was also a member of the Appleton Harmonica band for the short time that it lasted. Also a member of the Buffalo (lodge) and attended weekly meetings held at the Three Horse Shoes Public house (Appleton) on Friday evenings (pos Sat). Alfred was reported to have broken his knee while Ice Skating at the Rink in Botley Rd, Oxford.

Death.

By 1973, at the age of 82, Alfred had become frail and spent his last years being nursed at Cowley Road Hospital Oxford. Alfred died on 09-Feb-1975 at the age of 84. A funeral service was held at Appleton church and he was buried there on 13-Feb-1975. Grave stone positions.
