Life History

Charles Eli Stimpson was born on 27-Jul-1895 at Ock Street Abingdon Berks. He was the fourth son of Thomas Stimpson and Annie nee King.  Charles probably attended school at Draycott (Southmoor) then Standlake. By the time of the 1911 census Charles was living at Appleford with his parents. Charles likely left school at the age of 13 and started work helping his father as a labourer on a farm. On 2-Mar-1916 Charles, aged 21, was called up to join the Army and he joined the Royal Army service Corps (RASC). Charles survived WWI, unlike his elder brother William who had been tragically killed in France in 1917. Charles was discharged from the Army in Dec-1919 and likely moved back to Drayton Berks with his parents.

On the 18-Dec-1920 he married his wife Ethel Amy Rixon at St Peters Church Drayton Berks. Ethel was originally from Stratton Nr Swindon Wiltshire but she had also likely been living in Drayton for some years. At this time Charles was working as a Brick layer.

Charles and Ethel then moved to Oxfordshire where he found work as a Groom. His wife Ethel worked in the same house as a domestic servant. In 1926 they had their first and only child Barbara Stimpson.

In about 1931 Charles, Ethel and their daughter moved to a remote house probably north of Woodstock Oxfordshire. The house is described as being one of two cottages in a remote field, with the nearest farm house being 1 mile away. The house is close to a waterwheel house on a stream that feeds into Blenheim palace lake.

Around 1935 Charles became ill with a Tumour on the brain and was sent to a London hospital for surgery. He later transferred to the Radcliffe infirmary Oxford to recover and returned home in about 1936.

Their home was now at Tackley Oxfordshire where they lived in a cottage close to the village Green. Charles regularly travelled by bus to a clinic at Oxford for further treatment and observation. Charles later listed his occupation as a Roadman.

In about 1939 Charles and family temporarily moved to another cottage just across the road, while their landlord repaired the roofs on the row of four cottages. Once the work was complete then Charles and family moved back to the adjacent cottage to the one they occupied before. The end cottage by the village Green Tackley. (The Bothy)

As the rest of Tackley village celebrated the end of the war in May 1945, Charles was by this time seriously ill. He lived to see his daughter married in August 1945 but passed away less than 2 months later aged 50. Charles was buried at Tackley Church on 24-Sep-1945. His wife Ethel continued to live in Tackley until her later years when she moved to Upper Heyford to be close to her daughters family. Ethel died in 1975 at the age of 79.
