Life History
Edith HARRIS / STIMPSON was born in 1860 being the illegitimate daughter of Amelia HARRIS. It seems likely that the father was John James STIMPSON as Amelia and John were married shortly after the birth of Edith.
Although born in Southleigh, Edith moved with her parents to Fyfield and was living there when the 1861 census was taken. Listed as age 1.
Edith would have attended school at Fyfield, and was still living in the village, with her parents, at the age of 21. Listed as General Servant out of employ on the 1881 census.
On 9-Oct-1882 Edith acted as a witness at her younger brother Albert's marriage at Fyfield church.
It seems likely that Edith then moved to Abingdon in search of work. He younger sister Rosina was already known to be working for the prominent architect Edwin Dolby at Albert Park Abingdon and it seems that Edith also settled in this same area.
On 23-Mar-1889 Edith, now aged about 29, was married to Amos KING at St Helens church Abingdon.
The couple lived at 28 Edward Street Abingdon and were listed there on the 1891 census. Husband Amos KING was working as a Gardener and Domestic Servant.
In October 1900 Edith's younger sister Lily, who was working as a domestic servant at Nuneham Courtney, was reported to have visited Edith at 28 Edward Street, and was accused of wilful murder of her young son. Leaving the dead body in the house next door (26 Edward St). The Jacksons Oxford Journal article of 10th Nov 1900 mentions Edith as Mrs KING.
By the 1901 census, Edith was listed as a Dressmaker, and was still living with her husband Amos KING at 28 Edward St Abingdon.
Edith died in Abingdon at the age of 62 in 1922.
