Life History
Elizabeth STIMPSON was born at Frilford in 1812 being the daughter of James STIMPSON & Elizabeth nee ANGELL. She was baptised at Marcham church on 8-Nov-1812. The baptism entry is written among entries on the last page of the church baptism register as the book had become full, and lists the name as Simpson with no T. Although baptised as Elizabeth, and listed as Elizabeth on the 1841 census, most future documents list her as Eliza.
In 1835 Eliza, now aged about 23, gave birth to an illegitimate son, John James STIMPSON.
On 13-Oct-1835 Eliza married John BROUGHTON at Marcham church. John was a widower of Tubney who had peviously been married to Hannah SMALLBONE but she had died in 1834. Eliza and John both lived in Tubney for the rest of their lives. Eliza had another 7 children from this marriage. On the Census records Eliza is listed as born at Tubney, but both her baptism entry and marriage at Marcham church suggest she was of Frilford.
In 1850 two of Eliza's children tragically died within one month of each other. George BROUGHTON age 7 and Dinah BROUGHTON age 9. Both were buried at Fyfield church even though the new Tubney church had recently opened (in 1847). George was buried on 9-Jan-1850 and Dinah on 27-Jan-1850. This must have been traumatic for Eliza who was pregnant with another daughter (Amey) at that time. (This paragraph to be checked)
On 24-Jul-1873 Eliza's daughter Amey BROUGHTON was married to Paul WHEATLEY at Kingston Bagpuize church. Paul was from Kingston Bagpuize and this couple later lived in Tanner Street Wantage.
Eliza died at Tubney on 11-Mar-1877 aged 64. Her death certificate shows she died of "Inflamation of Bowels from obstruction". Daughter-in-law Amelia STIMPSON of Fyfield was present at the death. Eliza was buried at Tubney church on 15-Mar-1877 just 3 days after her husband had been buried there on 12-Mar-1877.
