Life History
Henry STIMPSON was born at Marcham Berkshire in 1778, being the son of Richard STIMPSON (1752) and Elizabeth nee BROWN (1758). Henry was baptised at Marcham church on 4-Oct-1778.
He married Elizabeth DIX (1778) in Marcham church on Thursday? 21-Oct-1802. Elizabeth was originally from Vernham Street, a village just south of Hungerford. The couple went on to have 11 children, all boys.
Henry was a Thatcher by trade and probably worked on many of the house roof's in Marcham during the early 19th Century. He likely passed all his skills on to son Charles who also followed the same profession.
Of their children:-
Son John STIMPSON (1805) married Martha HEARMAN at Marcham church on 8-Nov-1828. They had one son Edmund STIMPSON (1826).
Son James STIMPSON (1807) married Martha GRIFFIN on 21-Dec-1828 at Marcham church. He was later reported to have stolen a Handkerchief and was sentenced to 12 months hard labour (see JOJ article below) James died on 6-Apr-1841 at Ock Street Abingdon and his widowed mother, Elizabeth nee DIX was present at the death.
Son Henry STIMPSON (1811) married Esther GARDNER at Marcham church on 13-Jul-1835 but she died in 1851. Henry then married Ann BROWN in 1853 and they lived in Marcham until Henry died in 1882 aged 71.
Son Edward STIMPSON (1813) was also mentioned in the Jackson's Oxford Journal report of 1840, along with his brother James (see below)
Son Charles STIMPSON (1815) also followed his fathers profession of being a Thatcher. Charles married Rebecca NORTH on Christmas day 1839 and they too lived in Marcham. Charles died aged 58 in 1873, and his wife Rebecca and some of the children later emigrated to New Zealand.
Son George STIMPSON (1819) married Rebecca HOOK in 1839. They had a daughter Hannah STIMPSON (1840).
Son Jonathan STIMPSON (1820) married Ellen FARMER and moved to Cambridgeshire where he spent most of his working life as a Railway labourer.
Son Bernard STIMPSON (1826) was living with brother George and family at Marcham on the 1841 census (aged 13) along with his widowed mother.
Henry STIMPSON (1778) died about 1840 aged ~62. His wife Elizabeth continued to live in Marcham and died in 1858?
