Life History
Harriett STIMPSON was born in Frilford Berks in 1810. She was the 3rd child of James STIMPSON and Elizabeth nee ANGELL. Harriett was Christened at Marcham church on 13-Jul-1810.
By the time of the 1841 census, Harriett now aged 30 (28), was living at Church Street Marcham. She was a servant here, along with her sister Ann, to the Vicar of Marcham Herbert Randolph.
On 15-Apr-1845 Harriett married Benjamin STONE at Marcham church. Benjamin was a Wheelwright from Ock Street Abingdon and was some 7 years younger than Harriett.
Harriet and Benjamin spent most of their lives at the Wheelwrights in Ock Street Abingdon. In their later years Benjamin STONE retired and sold his Wheelwhright business and they moved into "Over the Water" Alms houses in Abingdon. Harriet died in 1879 aged 67 (69). After his wife's death, Benjamin then moved into the Christ's Hospital Long Alley Alms houses in West St Helens Street Abingdon. Benjamin lived there until his death in 1895.
It is interesting that the Jacksons Oxford Journal article of 1895 shows that Benjamin STONE was sharing a room at the Alms houses with Anthony STIMPSON. It is not currently known if this Anthony STIMPSON was a direct relative of Benjamin's late wife Harriet.
