Life History
John STIMPSON was born in Marcham Berks in 1795, being the youngest son of Richard STIMPSON and Elizabeth BROWN. John was baptised at Marcham church on 7-Jun-1795. When John was just 5 years old (1800) his mother Elizabeth died, and the following year, when John was just 6 his father Richard STIMPSON died. It is not currently known who brought up John though the rest of his parentless childhood.
When John was age 26 he married Lydia STONE (GOODENOUGH) on 4-Aug-1822 at Marcham church. Lydia was a widow who was living in Marcham at the time. She was originally from Letcombe Regis and had previously been married to Richard STONE for the last 6 years, but he had recently died.
John continued to live in Marcham with his wife and they produced 5 children. In about 1840 John and his wife Lydia moved from Marcham to Drayton Berks, where they lived next door to nephew John & Martha, son of Henry (1778).
John & Lydia's daughter Joanna possibly died at the young age of 15 in 1846. In 1851 Johns wife Lydia was sent to Littlemore Lunatic asylum where she spent the rest of her life.
On Boxing day 1857 John's eldest son (also John) married Eliza JAMES at Marcham church, and 3 years later his other son James STIMPSON married Ann DENTON at All Saints church Sutton Courtney. By the time of the 1861 census, John was still living at Lays cottages at Drayton with his youngest son William.
It is thought that John spent the last few months of his life in Abingdon Workhouse, and died there in 1862. (Note death cert shows age 69 but probably actually age 67). His wife Lydia died in Littlemore Asylum on 23-Jun-1865.
