Life History
John STIMPSON was born at Marcham in 1834 being the son of John STIMPSON and Lydia nee GOODENOUGH./STONE. By the time of the 1841 census John was aged 7 and living with his parents at Drayton.
On the 1851 census John was still at Drayton aged 17 and living and working as a Shepherd for William Caudwell the Farmer. It is likely that the case mentioned in Jacksons Oxford Journal in Feb 1855 relates to this John STIMPSON (see below)
John married Eliza JAMES on boxing day 1857. Eliza JAMES (1828) was from Wantage and the daughter of Thomas JAMES (1780). After their marriage John & Eliza set up home in Marcham where they both spent the rest of their lives. They had 3 children, the first being William STIMPSON (1858) who is strangely listed as John STIMPSON age 2 on the 1861 census, and was later known to live at Slough. Daughter Sarah Jane STIMPSON (1861) was working as a servant to Mrs Morland the Brewer in Bath Street Abingdon on the 1881 census. It seems likely that Sarah died at the young age of 25 in 1886. John and Eliza's youngest son Thomas STIMPSON (1864) married Sarah Ann THOMAS in 1895 and they also lived in Marcham (North Street).
At the time of the 1881 census John and Eliza were still living at Marcham and Eliza's widowed father Thomas JAMES (1780) was also now living with them.
By the time of the 1901 census John and Eliza were now at Sheepstead Road Marcham, and Grandson William Victor STIMPSON (1894) who was aged 7 and the son of William was also living with them.
Also present in the 1901 household was Henry STIMPSON (1855) who was listed as Johns Nephew. It is not known whether this Henry is the son of John's sister Jane, in which case he should be age 48 not 45, or whether it is the son of Edmund STIMPSON (1826) and Ellen KIMBREY (1828). If the latter he is the Great grandson of of Johns uncle Henry STIMPSON (1778) and aunty Elizabeth nee DIX (1778). This actually makes Henry a first cousin twice removed to John, rather than nephew but maybe listed as such for simplicity.
John STIMPSON died in 1902 aged 68. His wife Eliza continued to live in Marcham until she died in 1915 aged about 88.
Press cutting from Jacksons Oxford Journal 10-Feb-1855 likely relates to this John STIMPSON.
