Life History

Lily STIMPSON was born in 1882 at Fyfield, Berks. She was the seventh child of John James STIMPSON of Tubney and Amelia nee HARRIS. When Lily was just 4 years old (1886), her father died. By the time of the 1891 Census, Lily was 9 years old and living with her mother and four siblings at Main Street, Fyfield. When Lily was 18, an article was reported in the Jacksons Oxford Journal of 20th October 1900 entitled “Serious crime by a servant girl". This details how Lily, now aged 18, was accused of “Wilful Murder” when her Illegitimate son was found dead in a garden at Edward Street Abingdon.

Lily had visited her sister, Edith King (nee Stimpson/Harris) on Monday 8th October 1900, at 28 Edward St Abingdon. (See 1901 Census details for 28 Edward St). She had stayed the night, given birth to an illegitimate son and then concealed the body in the garden next door. She then caught the 7:15 train to Culham, and then walked back to Nuneham Courtney where she was in service. Lily’s mother (Amelia) was also known to be living at Nuneham Courtney (1901 census) and working as a house keeper.

Another Article was reported in Jacksons Oxford Journal 2 weeks later, detailing how the charge of “Wilful Murder” had been changed to the lesser crime of “Concealment of birth”. Lily was admitted to the Abingdon Workhouse Infirmary. A further article was then published the following week finding Lily not guilty of all charges.

By the time of the 1901 census Lily was living in Richmond (14 Cumberland Rd). Her sister Rosina, now married to George TINSON, was also living close by in Richmond (52 Raleigh Rd).

Lily later married Peter Thomas PAYNE at Portsmouth reg dist in 1905. By the time of the 1911 census she was living at Blackgang on the Isle of Wight, where her husband was a coastguard.

It seems likely that Lily lived in the Swindon area for a while, presumably to be close to he brother Albert, and then settled in Melcombe Regis Weymouth Dorset.

Lily died aged 77 on 14-Jul-1959 at Melcombe Regis Weymouth Dorset. Her husband Peter Thomas Payne also died at Melcombe Regis Weymouth on 26-Jan-1962 aged 88.
