Life History
Shadrach James STIMPSON was born on 08-Jan-1864 at Netherton, Berks. He was the second son of John James STIMPSON of Tubney and Amelia nee HARRIS. When the 1871 Census was taken Shadrach was living in Netherton Fyfield age 7, with his parents, and listed as a scholar. Presumably attending Fyfield C of E School. The home is described as the middle cottage of 3, being stone built with gardens, enclosed with a good stone mound and adjoining the road through Netherton. [See Jacksons Oxford Journal 20/6/1868 press cutting on fathers page]. This would suggest that Shadrach lived his childhood in the cottages opposite Stones Farm in Netherton Berkshire.
When aged 12, in 1876, Shadrach was reported to be playing with friends Joel Prior, Giles Freeman & Charles Simmonds at Fyfield Church, where they damaged the lamp in the church porch. [Jacksons Oxford Journal 28/10/1876].
By the time of the 1881 Census Shadrach was still living at Fyfield aged 17, with his parents, and working as an agricultural Labourer.
On 9-Apr-1888 Shadrach acted as a witness at the marriage of his younger sister Rosina STIMPSON to George NEWMAN at Fyfield church.
This same George NEWMAN accidentally shot himself in an accident with a walking-Stick shotgun at Radley college in December 1890.
By 1891 Shadrach was still living at Main Street, Fyfield, age 27, with his mother and widowed sister. His father had died in 1886.
On Boxing day in 1891, when Shadrach was aged 27, he married a local Fyfield village girl named Elizabeth Emily GRAINGER.
They were married at Fyfield church on Saturday 26th December 1891. His bride, Elizabeth, was the daughter of George GRAINGER and Sarah.
Shortly after marriage the couple set up home in Water Eaton Oxon (c.1892).
On 30-Jul-1893, when Shadrach was aged 29, his wife Elizabeth, gave birth to their first daughter Edna Mary STIMPSON.
Four years later their family was completed when their second child Alfred John STIMPSON was born on 12-Oct-1897.
After a short time of living at Water Eaton, they moved to Eaton Berks, and then later (c.1905) near to the Baptist Chapel in Appleton Berks.
Shadrach died at the young age of 45, before both his son Alfred or daughter Edna were married.
He was buried at Appleton Church on 14-Sep-1909.
His grave was said to be formerly marked with a headstone on the plot to the right of the tower at Appleton church. Grandson WJS recalls placing flowers
at this location during childhood.
Wife Elizabeth is listed as living at Park Lane on the 1911 census. Her Father (George GRAINGER), uncle (William GRAINGER) and nieces Florence
and Mabel BROWN are also present at this address. Wife Elizabeth continued to live in Appleton until she died, aged 52, in 1919. She too was buried at St
Lawrence’s church Appleton on 23-Jan-1919.
