Life History
William Stimpson was born at Marcham on 17-Jul-1839 being the youngest son of John STIMPSON and Lydia STONE / GOODENOUGH. At age 1 he was living with his parents at Drayton Berks. On 18-Nov-1865 he married Sarah DENTON (1840) at Sutton Courtney Berks. The couple then had their first son Edward STIMPSON but it is possible that Sarah died during the childbirth. Sarah was buried on 31-Jan-1867 and son Edward was baptised on 24-Feb-1867 at Drayton. William and son Edward then moved to Sonning Berkshire, where he married his second wife, Jane Hannah BINT.
William and Jane produced a further 6 children (as above) and by the time of the 1881 census they were living in Tilehurst Berkshire.
In 1896 Williams second wife Jane (nee BINT) died at Tilehurst age 46.
In 1899 William (now aged ~60) married his third wife Mary Jane APPLETON-FERGUSON at St George's Tilehurst. Mary Jane APPLETON was originally from Winchester and had previously been married to John Henry FERGUSON, but he had died in 1897 in Reading.
By the 1901 census William and (Mary) Jane were living at 586 Oxford Rd Reading. Wife Mary Jane was listed on the census as Jane so maybe she regularly used her second name, or maybe William accidentally quoted his 2nd wife instead of the 3rd!!!
Williams third wife Mary Jane died at St Mary's Reading later in 1901 at the young age of 48 after only being married to William for less than 2 years.
By the time of the 1911 census, William was living at 20 Hilcot Road Reading, where he was staying with his niece Ann SIMMONS. On this census William is shown as married but no wife is present in the household. It is possible that he married his 4th wife Susan KIMBREY-GOVER at Reading Methodists chapel in 1903 (needs futher checking)
William continued to live in Reading and died there in 1929 at the good age of 90.
