Chinese Music

Focus

Within this unit you will develop your awareness of the pentatonic scale and how it is used in Chinese music, through listening, composing and performing.  You will also develop an awareness if music from different parts of the world and the cultural and historical influences upon it.

You will learn to

Perform melodies that use the pentatonic scale

Identify Chinese instruments through listening extracts

Respond to and evaluate different music in comparison to Western music

Perform your own composition based on the pentatonic scale

You will learn about

Pentatonic scale

Pipa, Erhu, Yang Qin and Dizi (musical instruments)

Ostinato

Chord

Your work will show

Awareness of the cultural; and historical background and influences of Chinese music

An understanding of the construction of the Pentatonic scale

Awareness of chords and ostinato as a compositional technique

Good listening skills and recognition of the Chinese instruments with revision of the elements of music from year 7

The ability to work well with others to plan and record group compositions and performances

Your finished work will include

A written record of listening tasks

Well researched and written homework

A recorded performance and self assessment

Your own group/individual composition using the pentatonic scale

A project about Chinese music and traditions
