Indian Music

Focus

Within this unit we will develop an awareness of the cultural and historical background of Indian music through listening and compositional tasks.  We will develop an awareness of the terms raga and tala and know how these are constructed and be able to compose and perform our own. We shall discriminate between Indian and other ethnic music while becoming familiar with technical terms and commonly used instruments.

You will learn to

Identify raga and tala

Develop aural awareness

Respond to and evaluate music from India and compare to modern pop - Kula Shaker

Perform and compose own talas using drones and improvisation

Identify instruments used and discuss the music using technical terms

You will learn about

Raga, tala, alap, ostinato, drone and improvisation

Historical and cultural background of Indian music

The influences Indian music has had upon the pop world - The Beatles and Kula Shaker

Indian instruments

Performing talas and using them in performances

Performing and composing your own raga using improvisation and a drone background

Your work will show

Knowledge of the music style 

Understanding and awareness of social, cultural and historical influences

Good listening skills and application of theory and knowledge of instruments used

The ability to work well on your own and with others in performance work

The ability to improvise your own raga 

The ability to fit part with others in class performance

Your finished work will include

A written record of listening tasks

Well researched and written homework in your own words

A project 

Your own tala composition

A recording of an raga improvisation
