A tremendous site with clear information on all sections.  Includes fun interactive games.  Shockwave needed.

Guide to the Symphony Orchestra
An excellent site providing information on all instruments.  There is a seating plan, history of the orchestra and a glossary of terms.  Well worth a look.

Energy In Air
A clear and informative site with excellent information on instruments of the orchestra with sound files.  Also provides some good projects on sound.

A Piano Exploration
A site that is solely devoted towards the education and learning of every aspect of the piano.  Includes on-line lessons and games.

Internet Cello Society
A good site dedicated to introducing the cello from beginners to enthusiasts.  You will need to go to the cello introduction section.

Trumpeter's Fanfare
A well designed site with fun graphics and games.  Well worth your time.

Tour the Instruments
An encyclopedia of all the instruments.  Allows pupils to listen to the instruments but requires Real player.  There is also not a search option not find instruments easily.  Nevertheless, a worthwhile site if you need information about some of the less common instruments.

Percussion instruments
A good page if looking for information about percussion instruments.  Gives fun facts and examples of compositions that the instruments are used in.


The piano

A great page by a young piano player.  This site offers advise on practisicing, information about the piano and lots more.

Playing the piano
This virtual reality Java piano lets you play the piano
and have a little fun while learning the relationship
between the sounds, music theory, musical scales, and
the underlying math and physics of how sounds are produced
and perceived.  A site you must visit!

Free Piano Lesson
A lesson on the basics of playing the piano.  This site used Flash.  It presumes that you know nothing about piano playing.  A good site for beginners. 

Free Guitar Lesson
A lesson on the basics of guitar playing.  This site uses Flash and again presumes no prior knowledge of how to play the guitar.  Good for begginers.

Instruments sounds
Hear what each instrument sounds like.  A very good resource.  Needs Real Player.


Instruments of the Orchestra

The families of instruments: Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Keyboards, Percussion. For each family we not only have some general information but also many examples of instruments.

Guess the instrument
Requires Realplayer.  A good site where you have to guess the instrument from listening to two extract and looking at a picture.  When you correctly answer a pop up window gives a description of that instrument.

A tremendous interactive game that is lots of fun.  Can you unscramble the clues to discover the instruments?  If you get really stuck Octohelp will provide an line instrument dictionary.

Instruments Quiz
Test your knowledge of musical instruments with this on-line quiz.  You have to select 'Musical instruments' from the scroll box.  A short test but it has good questions.  Have a go!
