Shigwala Juju Mask - Peter Musa 2000
Shigwala Juju Mask
The mask is my first Obom piece. I call it the "Shigwallah" juju mask. Shigwallah is a juju or masquerade in Nso' and belongs to the Ngiri society. My late father, in whose memory the Musa Heritage Gallery is named, was a high ranking member of the Ngiri society the "Yer Ngiri". When I decided to work with Obom, I first thought of my father, then the Shigwallah figure was quick to come to my mind. The mask took me eight hours non-stop work to complete it, working in Meke's workshop in Abong-Mbang.
