Chadian Figures
Chadian Refugees

These two figures were done by John and myself between 1982 and 1983 in Kumba. John conceived the idea and my duty was mainly to assist him in carving out the objects. This was how John viewed Chadian refugees who were mostly tall and slender and could be spotted almost all over Cameroon during the late 1970's and in the 1980's. These refugees fled due to the civil war in their country, Chad. The left figure measures 1.66m. and is wearing trousers while the upper part of the body is bare. It holds a human face which John referred to as a war criminal. The figure on the right is 1.73m. and depicts a hungry man. He is tired, weak and pale as a result of the war, long trekking from far away Chad, hunger and and great uncertainty. In all, these two figures speak of the horror of war as seen by the eyes of an artist in a country which plays host to refugees. These are the works of an artist who had never experienced warfare but who had the opportunity of meeting and interacting with victims of war - refugees from Chad.
