Girls U10's
Runners Up in Tournament
The tournament was set up with a league of 4
teams & a league 3 teams - albeit we turned up with 17 - yes
17 players from which I had to pick a squad of 10 players.
We asked if we could enter two teams (just for the matches)
but the league officials refused (even though the other
teams agreed for us to play in the tournament with 2 sides).
There was obvious disappointment for the 7
left out - but they played 4 matches in friendlies winning
1, drawing 1, & losing 2. They did extremely well with Laura
& Lotti scoring our goals.
As for the tournament, we were drawn in the
hardest league with Dafen, Garden Village & Llangyfelach.
Matches were 7 mins each way. Pontlliw, Landore &
Bancffosfelin were in the other division.
We won our first match V Dafen (the first
time we have beaten them & only the second game they have
lost in 22 matches this season). Katie Davies scored the
winner early in the first half.
In game 2, we played Garden Village to whom
we lost 2-0. As much as we tried to convince the girls the
tournament was won by beating Dafen, they never really got
going.
We knew we had to win the last game to stand
a chance of going to the semi's & the girls really stepped
up their performance. We beat Llangyfelach 4-0 with Katie
Davies scoring 3 & Lauren Nash scoring her first ever goal.
With all the matches played in the league
section, we got through to the semi's on goal difference
with Garden Village - with Dafen the favourites missing out.
We played Pontlliw in the semi achieving a
0-0 result. It then went into golden goal situation in a 3
min each way extra time. We scored 2 minutes into the game
only to find the the ball had already gone out for a goal
kick!
The game therefore continued & with 1 min
left Becky Hughes hit a rasper for Mumbles to win 1-0 with
the golden goal.
We met Garden Village again in the final, in
a close encounter. We gave everything we had & more but it
wasn't enough to beat them as they scored to win 1-0. I
think after 5 matches we were a little more drained then
they were.
The girls were delighted to get to be runners
up in the competition & were duly awarded their medals at
the end of the game.
Thanks go to Richard in but in particular all
the parents who understood the difficult position of
choosing a squad of 10 & helping soften the blow for the 7
who couldn't play in the squad.
The girls who missed selection have been
promised to play as the first team next week in our first
game.Dave Nash U10 Manager
