Bicentenary of the Death of Cook |
This landlocked former French colony, which used to be called Haute
Volta (Upper Volta), issued four stamps in 1978 prematurely commemorating the
bicentenary of Cook's death. The stamps were also released imperforate and as
four imperforate miniature sheets. In 1999 they issued a set of ships stamps
including a sheetlet showing a Resolution. It is however the Resolution from
1667 and not Cook's ship.

The Comoro Islands first issued a Cook
overprint on an independence issue in 1978 (30f & 50f stamps). In 1979 both
a 1500f stamp and miniature sheet were issued partly commemorating Cook and
partly the Year of the Child. In 1992 a set of Explorers included a 75f stamp
that featured Cook and both the ship and space shuttle Endeavour.
Most recently in
2008, the islands (now called Union de Comores) released a sheet of 6 showing
ancient navigators. The 450fc stamp shows Cook.

This small country on the Horn of Africa released two stamps in 1980 to
belatedly commemorate the bicentenary of Cook's death. These stamps were also
released imperforate and as two deluxe miniature sheets (perforate and
imperforate). In 2000, they released a set called Millennium of Navigation that
included the Endeavour on one stamp.
Most recently, Djibouti has
released two sheetlets of 9 showing ‘the Great Navigators’ including Cook,
Bougainville and Tasman. (2010)
