Clamp
- Nanase OKAWA born on 2nd May 1967
- Mokona APAPA born on 16th June 1968
- Mick NEKOI born 21st January 1969
- Satsuki IGARASHI born 8th February 1969
Their Life:
Osaka, a group of young ladies used to gather for all sort of all-nighters (eg: horror film projections, fire-works next to the castle)
Some of the girls in that group went on to draw in various dôjinshi (fanzines)
To "celebrate their friendship", they decide to create a new mangaka group and call it
CLAMP - from the English meaning "mountain of potato" 0_o;;
In the dojinshi, they start developing (as short stories) the plot for many of their future successes:
Rg Veda, Tokyo Babylon, Clamp School, etc.
The group shrinks by and by (Boy I'm sure some of those girls regret it now - ed)
In May 1989, there are only 7 members of Clamp left: Tamayo AKIYAMA, Mokona APAPA, Satsuki IGARASHI, Sei NANAO, Mick NEKOI, Nanase OOKAWA,
and Leeza(real name: Yasuko) SEI.
In December 1989, Clamp's first manga is published with Derayd Moon of Boundary Balance (by Tamayo AKIYAMA - hey, I've got that!! - ed)
RG Veda was also in pre-publishing in the magazine Wings.
A few months later, Sei NANAO suddenly leaves the group. After a few volumes, Tamayo AKIYAMA also leaves to pursue
her solo carrier followed by Leeza SEI.
Now the remaining members live in Tokyo and move about once a year. They also love video games and have
a Play Station, a Sega Saturn, a Super Famicom, a Famicom, a Megadrive (with Mega CD), a Gameboy and a Gamegear.
They particularly like atmosphere games like Twilight Syndrome on the PlayStation,
The Individuals:
- Nanase OOKAWA thinks up the stories, she also deals with merchandise design.
A high-school friend introduced her to the group. She knew Tamayo AKIYAMA from kinder-garden.
Fantastic movies fan, she loves "The Naked Lunch" (David Cronenberg) as well as
thrillers like "Silence of the Lambs"
Music wise, she listens to the Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Nanase, like the other group members likes video games and apparently has quite a good selection of
erotic games (for the PC) in her collection . "For the scenarii"
Despite other Mangakas, Nanase never lets the public opinion interfere with her story.
So if a character has to die (due to circumstances, etc.), he/ she WILL.
Nanase says she is not for suicide for example but that it is not for us to condemn or judge people who do.
She also is against the notion of sacrificing oneself to save other on the principal that the remaining
people could not possibly live happy ever after knowing that their friend has died for them.
- Mokona APAPA is the main drawer (makes her sound like a piece of furniture - ed).
She started in drawing clubs at school and signed her first mangas in high-school
Apparently her and the other drawing artists in the group are very heavy handed when drawing
so Clamp uses special sheets of paper (3 times as thick as the ones used by other mangakas)
For colour illustration she uses ... well, if not BB Kent (verso of above paper), anything (paper bags, card board, tea wrapping.
(apparently sometimes, the shopss name is still visible: see "X"'s Ten no Ryû illustration)
- Mick NEKOI is the author of the SD (Super Deformed) found at the end of most of Clamp comics.
She has also started her own mangas: Watashi no Suki na Hito, Wish.
She likes technique and colour. She started drawing as a child and it seems to be the main focus in her life now.
- Satsuki IGARASHI
She chose Kakyoo, the cat that lives with them and also stars in the most recent SDs as
well as on the cover of Watashi no Suki na Hito (take the sleeve off and you'll see Kyakoo's paw prints)
and in the illustrations for the novel Yumegari.
Their Work:
A CLAMP project starts with a base scenario. Nanase then starts to define the characters and the number
of pages needed to develop it all. Mokona and Mick then gather up to decide on the main characters' design
At this point, Nanase goes over the characters again. After all the details of their personality
(culinary tastes, talents, education, if they wear pyjamas to sleep, etc.) have been established
The team also has established very strict working rules: each member deals with their own work only
though they can ask for advice or opinion... which must be honest and can be critical.
