Guidance for Teachers and Parents.
Lesson 1 - Prediction
National Curriculum: Programmes of Study for Sc1
In the context of Life Processes and living things,
Materials and their properties and Physical Processes pupils
should be taught about experimental and investigative methods.
Key Elements
(a) To use scientific knowledge and understanding to turn ideas suggested to them, and their own ideas, into a form that can be investigated.
(b) To make predictions where it is appropriate to do so.
(c) To decide whether the results support the original prediction when one has been made.
Objectives
Pupils should:
(a) Start to develop their inclinations to ask questions about the world around them into a more structured form of enquiry.
(b) They should understand that this might start with hypothesising.
Outcomes
Pupils should be able to:
(a) Create simple ideas or hypothesis.
(b) Use scientific knowledge to support their idea or hypothesis.
Notes
The term hypothesis may confuse some Year 7 children and should be used with caution. Some will have been introduced to hypothesising at Key Stage 2. They will all have made predictions. Predictions supported by what the pupils know is the main emphasis of this lesson.
