Year 7 Science
Materials and their properties
Guidance for Teachers and Parents.
Lesson 1 - Sorting Things Out
National Curriculum: Programmes of Study for Sc3
Work on the classification of materials
Key Elements
(a) to recognise differences between solids, liquids and gases, in terms of properties, eg density, compressibility, ease of flow, maintenance of shape and volume.
Objectives
Pupils should:
(a) Understand the meaning of the term property/properties
(b) Use their observational skill to identify properties of different materials
(c) Be able to classify materials on the basis of their observed properties.
(a) Be able to distinguish between raw materials and manufactured objects.
Outcomes
Pupils are be able to:
(a) Classify object and materials into a variety of groupings.
Notes
This lesson revisits concepts and knowledge seen at Key Stage 2. As a consequence some students will be able quickly to progress to lesson 2 or extension work.
The drag and drop activity requires Internet Explorer 4 or above. The alternative is the pencil and paper exercise on the main page. Pupils using Word 97 or similar program can construct their own shape drag and drop activity.
Extension Work
Classify materials as solid, liquids or gases at room temperature on the basis of melting and boiling points.
