Making Charcoal

If you heat pieces of wood strongly it will be converted to almost pure, black carbon. This will only happen if at the same time you make sure that air and therefore oxygen are kept away from the heated wood. In this way the wood will not catch fire.

This is now done by heating wood in large metal containers or by heaping soil around and over a pile of logs.
