Animated Infra-Red Spectroscopy.

Student will first experience the mystery of infra-red while studying advanced level chemistry. For many the graphical peaks and troughs of this structural analysis technique will remain a puzzle. Here is some help for those struggling to relate spectroscopic features and molecular vibrations. Simply locate molecules spectrum by name, formula or functional group and click on the absorption peak to download a QuickTime movie of the corresponding vibration.

Visual Aids for Organic Chemistry.

This is a must visit site for students of advanced level chemistry. The author has constructed some brilliant Shockwave animations on aldehydes, ketones, stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms and a lot more besides. Each rapidly loading file is a really effective learning experience with the user being exposed to additional features of the chemistry with each click. 3D glasses are a must for some of the molecular animations.

Molecules with Silly or Unusual Names

Chemistry for an adult audience courtesy of Bristol University. Chemists may indeed have a sense of humour. How else could an academics come up with exotic and sometimes rather rude sounding names for chemical compounds. At the more humorous end have a look at rhamnose and munchnones. Clicking on many of the 32 images takes you to interactive 3D versions (chime plug-in required). The chemistry is good but it's not a site for the easily offended.

Delights of Chemistry.

Bangs, smells and flashes - the best parts of chemistry. The chemists at Leeds University certainly enjoy a good chemical reaction. This developing site provides the experimental details on an exciting series of demonstration lectures for A level students. The barking dog and the chemiluminescent rainbow just for starters. Images and movies may not provide all the sensory experiences of the real thing but they will tempt the questions how and why. The experts provide the answers.

Instumental methods

The Basics of NMR.

Many advanced level chemistry students will be familiar with the principles of 'nuclear magnetic resonance' spectroscopy. They will not feel too far out of their depth with the comprehensible introductory chapter. Beyond this, the level of the material is more suited to graduate level study. Whatever the competence of the reader the simple animations and graphics are helpful accompaniments to this well written on-line text.

Organic Chemistry Help.

This noteworthy site from Frostberg University is a valuable study and revision aid for A level chemists. Starting with concise interactive tutorials, it covers some familiar topics. The alkanes, alcohols, amines and carboxylic acids are just a few. The 'reaction mechanisms' section gets more complex but is not beyond competent school chemists. Self-grading quizzes, FAQs and relevant links are all there to help students master this complex chemical area.

Teaching and Learning

Chemistry ConcepTests.

This is a teaching and learning resource for advanced level chemistry but more importantly it is a pedagogic method. Questions are posed and possible answers are provided. Students vote on the solutions and then enter into a process of peer instruction and explanation. Votes are cast again. The topics covered so far are general, organic, analytical and inorganic chemistry.

Chemistry Quizzes.

A useful selection of interactive multiple choice questions on a range of physical and biochemical science topics. These include organic chemistry, nuclear radiation and nucleic acids. A quiz contains 15 questions each with 4 possible responses. Select and submit your answers for marking. The returned page provides your score and correct answers. Great as a revision aid for advanced level students.
