Loads of good swims from everyone and too many PBs to mention.
Regardless of position it was lovely to see newcomers like Riccardo

doing all remaining races despite having been poorly early on in meet)

“Congratulations to Ollie & Liz on their recent engagement” (Sept 08)

Pat Pitt: Oct 1946 – July 2008.

Thank you Diane for composing the following;

Glos. Masters lost one of their most loyal members who died on July 19th after a short illness with cancer.

Pat joined GMSC in 1989 mainly to get herself fit for a fund raising “It’s a Knockout” fun event for Multiple Sclerosis. She enjoyed swimming enough to continue regular training for 20 yrs……,.,, and when the old Leisure Centre closed in 1998 for four years she continued her support and travelled to the various locations around the county where we had pool time.

She encouraged and supported her children Edward & Yvette in club swimming and attended and officiated in their galas.

Such was Pat’s love of swimming that she became a swim coach and instructed at Beaufort for several years.

Pat was fun loving and had a great sense of humour. This was always very apparent on the annual trips to Club la Santa where she was a regular for 18 yrs! – enjoying the open-air pool training in bright sunshine and the fun and laughter with good friends.

Pat was a very brave lady and accepted her final illness with great courage and dignity. She felt blessed to have had 32 yrs of a great marriage to Barry and two lovely children and a sweet granddaughter Alicia (4).

She said her goodbyes to family and friends, put her affairs in order and considered herself fortunate to have had the time to do so.

She was a remarkable lady and will be greatly missed.

Three of our top swimmers performed at the Barnet meet in July. Thank you Sandy for results.

Richard Searle & Tony Cherrington take age group golds at GL1 in 1500m swims on 28/06/08 - see archive.

Henleaze Swimming Club Distance Swim (an attractive quarry location in Bristol) on 13th.July 08 (closing date 5th. July) – Richard Searle has drawn our attention to this. Visit www.gcasa.co.uk for entry form & poster.

South Cerney Lake distance swim:

“On the 8th of June, Karen Taylor and I represented Gloucester masters in a 3.8km lake swim at South Cerney near Cirencester. For those of you who never venture beyond a laned swimming pool, open water swimming can be a novel and challenging experience. It attracts swimmers, triathletes and madmen. Wet suits were not compulsory but well advised and 120 swimmers lined up for the siren blast at a mass start. The course was two and a half laps around a lake following a route marked out by large orange buoys. Finishing times varied from 47min to 1 hour 50min. Both Karen and I managed to beat home the majority of competitors, Karen was the 5th woman over the line and an impressive 12th overall in a time of 57min 21s. I was pipped to the line by some young whipper snapper of a 17 year old and finished 2nd in 47min 41sec. Being a regular open water swimmer in Australia I think it is great fun, quite different from pool swimming but definitely worth a go at. VOTWO who put on the event have another in a few weeks near Bedford and for the first time this year there is a 'Great North Swim' in Lake Windermere, www.greatswim.org”. -- Oliver Wilkinson

GB Masters Manchester June 08: Captain Sandy gives her overview:- (some photos up more follow soon) Press Report

“Team of 23 swimmers - 76 swims - competing over 8 different age groups & Club represented in 'every' event. (I thought this was quite an impressive
testimony to our diversity as a club.
33 individual medals & 4 relay medals = 37 :- Including 11 GOLD medals (Katie 3, & Han, Tony, Simon, Ollie all 2 each )
& my personal votes (as a spectator) for best swims of the meet are:
Katie’s win in the 400 free (4.50.35 which was a PB), Carole’s 400 Free (7.39.64 which was 10 seconds under her entry time)
But best of all . . .
Karen’s 200 Fly (just for the sheer hell of it, No normal person should enjoy 200 fly THAT much!!! KT just made my weekend!!)
Sorry, no men on list! - you all just swam really well & were just all too predictably consistent . . .was missing the excitement factor I'm afraid!!

Alex Drury & Hannah Pfaff (now engaged ! – congratulations) leave for their new life in New Zealand end of June (08) and we wish them well. They will be missed. Between them they have made an outstanding contribution to the club over many years. We hope  they will send us some news from time to time. Nice farewell do at ZiZi’s (photos displaying).

Welsh Capital meet 10th. May: about a dozen of us enjoyed a hot day in the beautiful new pool & carted off some medals.Full  results in archive. A few pics.are on display.

Fina Masters Perth: Lorna, Stuart & Tony all acquitted themselves very well of course & have now got over their jet lag. Regretfully they didn’t take one of the rest of us along as official photographer to record what a great time they had!

Terry Ward Memorial trophy for 2008 – I (Nick McD.) was chuffed to bits to be awarded it this year. Thank you - & thank you Angela & Keith for presenting.

Terry had been a long time club & committee member and a good friend to many when he died  3 yrs.ago. I particularly remember him on Lanzarote trips not so much for his efforts in training but for his explorations to find new & sometimes obscure restaurants on the island. Also he was an old Richian !

Our Open Meet: Thank you to all those who participated. Amongst many fine swims there were also some records: Balazs Gyorffy in 200m F/S and Eric Henderson in 50m & 100m Fly. - awaiting ratification by ASA. ( ? was there a Welsh record also.) Huge thanks to the organizers particularly Brian Jones, Mike Aldridge, Belle O’Connell and the very witty chap on the microphone Herbie Adams. All overseen by our very own Karen Taylor with unstinting support from many timekeepers, programme sellers etc.

Etwall Masters took the coveted top team trophy away with them and Ben Rees, from Amersham, the Carl Freeman trophy. (pictures in the Gallery link “Trophy collection”)

Richard Searle from our club meanwhile was distinguishing himself at Millfield long course swim with three 200m PB’s & 1sts. (see Archive)

Results from Leamington & Yeovilton are kindly being assembled by Sandy. Please see archive. Report follows later. Also gallery pictures gradually being expanded (Penny’s Lanzarote pics, Richard & Niki’s Yeovilton pics, re-union party)

Thank you to Gerwen, Carole, Jane, Esther, Penny & Han for organizing the 20yr. Club reunion party on 29th. March. The turnout was estimated at around 150 with many old members making an appearance. Mike’s presentation gifts were a handsome engraved glass trophy item, a vintage Heuer stopwatch and cased champagne..
