I was wearing a sweatshirt with "The Broads" written on the
front while visiting America. Several people asked me who
these broads are. Of course, everyone in Britain has heard
of the Norfolk Broads and will tell you that "Broad" is the
Norfolk word for Lake. Norfolk is a county on the East Coast
of England which is very flat. At one time the area was very
marshy, but now much of the land has been drained leaving
a network of rivers and lakes which are collectively known as
the Norfolk Broads. There are over 150 miles of navigable,
lock free waterways. It is a popular holiday area and many
people venture out onto these inland waters in hired cruisers
and sailing boats.
After we retired, we left London far behind and we came to live in the village
of Ludham which is at the heart of The Broads. Click the button above for
more information about the village.
We have a small boat called Woodwose (picture above left). This little boat is
ideal for exploring the waterways and you can often find us out on the water in
summer.
In 1990 we bought a little
bungalow on the banks of the
River Thurne. We were living
and working in London in those
days and it was our weekend
escape. We called the
bungalow Pot Pourri.
We spent many happy holidays
there, but after moving to live
just a couple of miles away, we
decided to sell it after 17 years.
Christina and I spent our
honeymoon in a hired boat on
the Norfolk Broads. This was
1975 so we have been married
for 35 years.
