BROADS

WELCOME TO MY NORFOLK BROADS PAGES:
A personal view of the area with lots of information and pictures

Barton Regatta I was wearing a sweatshirt with "The Broads" written on the front while visiting America. Several people asked me who these broads are. Of course, everyone in Britain has heard of the Norfolk Broads and will tell you that "Broad" is the Norfolk word for Lake. Norfolk is a county on the East Coast of England which is very flat. At one time the area was very marshy, but now much of the land has been drained leaving a network of rivers and lakes which are collectively known as the Norfolk Broads. There are over 150 miles of navigable, lock free waterways. It is a popular holiday area and many people venture out onto these inland waters in hired cruisers and sailing boats.

Christina and I have been visiting the Broads for many years. We spent our honeymoon in a hired cruiser on the Northern Rivers. In 1990 we decided to buy a holiday cottage near to the village of Potter Heigham. The cottage is on the bank of the River Thurne and we have spent many of our holidays and weekends there since that time. We keep a few boats there and enjoy cruising and sailing the rivers and lakes that make up the waterway system. Potter Heigham is a well known Broads landmark. It has an ancient and very low bridge over the river which is a major hazard to navigation. The bridge is so low and difficult to get through that the hire companies insist that their boats are only taken through by the Bridge Pilot and then only at low tide. With the wind blowing one way, the tide running another, a narrow crowded river, inexpirienced crews and several 40 foot cruisers trying to turn round and moor at once, it can be an exciting place to watch boats.
