Did you know that 1961 is one of those special years which is the same even if you turn the page upside down? It is
also the year I first joined the Cubs and I have been Scouting in some capacity or other ever since. Scouting is a lot
of fun and on these pages I hope to show you some of the fun things I have done down the years.
Scouting is the largest youth organisation with 28 million members worldwide. However, it is more than just a youth club. The Promise and the Scout
Law are a code of ethics and standards for your whole life. In these days of health and safety, it is one of the few places left where you can still have
an adventure. No matter what new technology may come along, there is still nothing to beat sitting round the camp fire deep in the woods after a day
of adventures and new experiences.
Scouting is 100 years old. It was started by Robert Baden-Powell who was a famous soldier. However Scouting is not a military organisation. We
stand for peace, freedom and tolerance. The world has come a long way in this respect in the last 100 years and you should not underestimate the
part that Scouting has played in this. This does not mean that there is still not a lot of work to do, but remember that 100 years ago we began with
just 20 Scouts. Think what 28 million can do in the next 100 years.
