Who Am I?

I'm an IT consultant/developer currently living in North London, with my wife Alexis and cat Zoe.

Whilst I was born in Croydon, South London (on 22 December, 1973), my parents moved to South Devon when I was less than a year old, and this is where I grew up. After graduating from the University of Sussex in 1996 - which included a year abroad studying at the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France - I moved to London in January 1997.

In April 1997, I started work as a Trainee Programmer with Total Systems plc, a software house that provides large-scale solutions to the financial (mainly insurance) sector.

Interests, Hobbies, and Such

Eldar

eldar is the pseudonym I use in most of my online guises (forums, boards, etc.). I started using the name eldar in a quiz game at Sussex Uni, and it quickly spread to general internet usage. The name originates with Tolkien, being the name he gives to the entire Elven race. I took the name from the Warhammer 40K table-top battle system, where the Eldar are mysterious, xenophobic, nomadic aliens who roam the galaxy in vast craftworlds. That they resemble Tolkienian Elves in their physical appearance is entirely deliberate. I've since discovered that the name is also Hebrew (marrying a Jewish woman helped in that respect). If you don't believe me, check out this news article. I could, of course, be lying about all of the above, and instead insist that the name is an acronym for "East London Dial-A-Ride".

Mono

|\/|onochrome is an internet bulletin board that has existed since 1988. I joined in 1992, just after starting University, and am currently the moderator of the Board & Card Games section. Over the years, the user base has gone from youthful, party-all-night students, to cautious, oft penniless graduates, to the current blend of mostly successful (oddly enough mainly in the IT industry) late-twenties-to-early-thirties professionals, some of whom are married to each other.

One of the most fun aspects of Mono - and indeed many other online socities - is meeting up with fellow users (generally in an establishment serving alcohol), and seeing what happens. On the odd occasion, I've taken some photographs, some of which I've organised into coherent web pages. Once I've updated them with my new styling, I'll add the links.

Bridge

I play bridge (though not very well). I'm a member of the Young Chelsea Bridge Club, and also play at Putney Bridge Club, the Woodberry Bridge Club, and the Ruff Club.

Civilization

To my wife's eternal frustration (or distraction? - I'm never quite sure which it is), and, at times, my own, I play lots of Civilization III, and, since November 2005, Civilization IV. I play competetively and co-operatively in the Game of the Month and Succession Games respectively at the Civilization Fanatics Center.

Livejournal

I maintain a blog using Livejournal.
