WORKING FOR YOU

Recruitment Secretary - Shirley Barnwell
As recruitment secretary, Shirley is proud to spread the benefits of ATL among students and NQTs. In particular, a cause close to her heart is to champion the case of Support Staff for a fairer deal across all three authorities.

Branch Secretary - Stuart Hart
Ultimately responsible for all aspects of Branch administration - organising meetings, contact with members, liaison with HQ, recruitment are just a few of the tasks that come to rest here. It could be a full time job in its own right and ought to be renamed the "Branch Workhorse". Stuart is also the Cheshire LEA Representative. He is usually the first point of contact for any member needing help and support. He visits schools throughout the county to maintain active contact with school reps and also produces the termly newsletter as one arm of our drive to keep members informed.

Executive Member and Branch President- Bruce Murdin
As Executive Member I am legally accountable for the affairs of the Association. The statutory elections for this post are held under the auspices of the Trades Union Certification Officer and as such, it is a National role.

We are not elected to carry out the mandate of a particular branch or branches, but of the individual members. To this end, at National Committee, the Exec member shall;
Take policy decisions,
Contribute to the generation of such policy
Take financial decisions, and finally
Represent the Association nationally as requested by the President and the Executive Committee.

Within the area, the job is to represent the public face of the Executive and the Association,
To provide information on matters concerning national issues,
To receive feedback from local members on matters concerning national issues and to convey that to the National Executive and General Secretary,
To endeavour to be aware of the views of their constituents,
To liaise with the Branch Secretaries.

All of which means - I am here to serve and assist YOU! I am contactable via this website under Exec Member (email) or via the telephone number given on the Branch information card.

Regional Official - Jenny Greenwood
As a Regional Official I am able to draw on 33 years of experience working in schools at all levels from classroom teacher to acting headteacher. I still feel that the most valuable and rewarding time in education has been in the classroom. However like you I have had to weather the unrelenting climate of change over the years. I know what it is like to have to cope with the increased accountability and pressure of achieving targets that are certainly demanding and not always realistic.

Being a Regional Official keeps me on my toes as much as teaching did. You never know what problem is going to be presented to you when you pick up the telephone. It can range from a simple question about salary to a major issue where a teacher is being suspended. The Members Charter guides the way we work together. The feedback from members tells us that the service provided by Regional Officials is very much appreciated. We can be contacted during evenings and weekends as well as during the day. When we pick up casework we see it through with you to what is hopefully a successful conclusion, providing information, supporting you in meetings, dealing with correspondence and whatever else is necessary in your case. We can also access the experienced and knowledgeable team of solicitors and specialists at Headquarters for the most up to date information and legal guidance.

My work crosses all boundaries from Foundation to FE, within both the maintained and the Independent Sector. I work closely with your Branch Officers as well as LEA Personnel. School and College Reps can play a very important role too, although individual casework is always dealt with on a confidential basis.

My advice to anyone who is troubled, or just needs information, is to get in touch sooner rather than later. Sometimes members feel that bringing in the Association will exacerbate a situation. I do assure you that this does not happen. I will provide you with a listening ear and guidance. I will talk through the options open to you and the possible consequences but then it is for you to decide upon the action most appropriate for you.

I look forward to continuing to work with our many members in the area and hopefully meeting some of you at Branch Meetings.
